Leadership for a Better Future

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE 4TH DISTRICT

First and foremost, I am running to be your Representative because I believe I can do the best job for Prince George 's and Montgomery County residents. I believe that I can be the kind of leader we need to address our problems today and in the future. I have a passion for serving you. I have a vision for the future of Prince George 's and Montgomery counties. I have a plan for what I want to do as your representative:

Protect your wallet from political pickpockets by sponsoring or cosponsoring an omnibus tax reform bill which will:
  • Let President Bush's tax cuts expire.
  • Correct the deficiencies in the Alternative Minimum Tax that disproportionately impact Marylanders.
  • Make the elimination of the marriage penalty permanent.
  • Promote small business growth by eliminating most special interest corporate welfare, tax breaks, and credits that lower the overall corporate tax rate and simplify filing. These laws hurt small businesses and are anti-capitalistic.
  • Simplify the tax code for individuals by simplifying the forms to allow individuals to deduct the full cost of their insurance premiums, primary home mortgage interest and property tax, charitable giving, business loss/(income), individual retirement account contributions and student loan interest. That's it.
  • Lower the death tax rate to the capital gains tax rate.
    •  Enhance our local economy by:
  • Allowing small businesses to pool together to purchase health insurance.
  • Promoting workforce training opportunities that will allow our local governments and businesses to replace retiring employees and provide more opportunities to those citizens who have dropped out of the traditional workforce. An example of the opportunities present is the International Masonry Institute national training facility in Bowie , MD.
  • Reversing the outsourcing of government jobs to Republican Party contributors and allies. There is a loss of accountability and oversight when government functions are outsourced to for profit firms, such as the EEOC call center. It has been clear that accountability is not a strong point of the Bush administration.
  • Maintaining net neutrality and deferring the implementation of taxes on the internet. Our area has a high concentration of technology and internet related companies that provide good jobs and future opportunities for entrepreneurs.
  • Amending COBRA to allow participants to stay under their health plans indefinitely until a larger solution is found for providing health insurance to the uninsured. This is not a panacea to the larger health insurance problem, but can help protect the long term financial and physical health of more families.
    •  Strengthen our schools by:
  • Eliminating No Child Left Behind. I believe it may be in our best interest to simply rescind the law and leave in place federal rules for calculating high school dropout rates to stop the sham that permits some states to hide their academic failures.
  • Starting a dialogue between parents, teachers, law enforcement and community groups about whether it is still wise to allow students to drop out of high school without any identifiable skills.
  • Work with community and governmental organizations to provide social services to help struggling children and their families. There are many forces beyond the control of the school system. We can strengthen our schools by engaging community organizations to help fill that need.

My approach to leadership is to listen to what our citizens have to say and focus on solving problems, rather than on scoring easy political points while problems go unresolved. I don't want to be represented by a do nothing incumbent who is only committed to his own reelection and has wasted 15 years of taxpayer dollars and constituent time. There are many — too many — lost and wasted opportunities from Congressman Wynn's tenure. I also don't want a West Coast liberal who is committed to their ideals. I would rather be represented by someone committed to Maryland progressives with local connections, not random endorsements from Gloria Steinem and Danny Glover.

We can't afford to wait for someone else to run for office and act in our collective interests rather than in narrow special interests. There are no white knights or silver bullets in politics to address our problems. Politicians who claim to have painless, easy or one-sided solutions are lying. I want to solve our problems. I solve problems for a living, like many of you do. When it comes to being happy or being right, too many elected officials choose being right: they pursue untenable proposals to score political points and blame someone else for failure, rather than make real progress. I don't believe that our existing choices for Congress will lead to any benefit for residents of the 4th congressional district. There will just be more of doing nothing and unnecessary partisanship.

I believe that I can be a better leader in the community. Congressman Wynn has only bothered to show his face and his team at events this year because he is running scared after 15 years of doing very little for the constituents of the 4th district. I believe that our congressional representative should be a leader in the community, working with local and community organizations and local governments to solve our problems. We can not always look to Congress to address our problems, as demonstrated during the Republican reign over the House of Representatives. However, that does not preclude our Representative from being a leader in the community. I will work to build a network of local and community organizations, local and county governments and our congressional delegation to align our activities and resources for the maximum benefit of our constituents.
